The attached resources support a sequence of ten fifty minute lessons that form part of a year nine unit of work examining human responses to earthquakes. The lessons focus on the development of speaking and listening skills (particularly persuasive speech), and include elements of group work, empathy, personal presentation, imagination and creativity. They act as a powerful stimulus to a piece of creative poetry writing that serves as a key assessment for the unit.
The initial motivation for planning this unit came from a desire to development work-related skills with year nine students, at a time when they were considering their options and possible future career paths.
After receiving extremely encouraging feedback from the students (as well as some impressive results), it was decided that the unit could be slightly re-jigged to focus on personal learning and thinking skills. All subject areas now have a responsibility to contribute to this aspect of learning, and it was not difficult to make some of these skills explicit in the planning and assessment of the unit. The QCA Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Framework has been attached, and a future upload will explain in more detail how this has been done.
Prior to this lesson sequence, a number of lessons cover elements of ‘background theory’, including the structure of the earth, plate tectonics, recent earthquakes, and the Richter scale.
It may be preferable to mix and match some of the content rather than follow the lessons as they are – it really depends upon the students.
