Key Stage 3 Geography Ning

Plans, resources and teaching ideas for Geography (11-14 years)

The 2012 Olympics is a unique opportunity to investigate geography in action – the transformation of a derelict river valley, urban regeneration on a grand scale, the potential for a sustainable Olympics. It’s the sort of geography that excites students and can be turned into a great learning experience.

Why not join best-selling author and three times winner of the Geographical Association’s Silver Award for educational resources, John Widdowson, on one of his many fieldwork investigations (run by the Field Studies Council (FSC)) and see for yourself why East London is happening!

The fieldwork investigations include:
* Was Stratford a good place to choose for the 2012 Olympics? (KS2/3)
* Which are the best venues for each Olympic sport? (KS2/3)
* Will the Olympics make the Lower Lea Valley more sustainable? (KS2/3)
* Controlled Assessment for the new GCSEs for AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC
* Fieldwork requirements for all the new AS/A2 specifications – AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC

And if you can’t make it to one of the courses, you can still be inspired by the Olympics by planning an Olympic bid for your own town using Chapter 5 from the recently published, This is Geography 3, written by John Widdowson.

This is Geography is a brand-new 3-part Series designed to engage Key Stage 3 pupils with an active-learning, enquiry-based approach to Geography, offering an inspiring, enquiry-led route through the new Programme of Study.

As John says, ‘This is Geography is the course that I have always wanted to write… Instead of being a slave to content, I have focused on the sort of geography that young teenagers are really interested in and ask the sort of questions they actually ask. Less content, more learning!’
